RimWorld
RimWorld is a sci-fi colony simulator driven by an intelligent AI storyteller. Inspired by Dwarf Fortress, Firefly, and Dune, it begins with three survivors of a space wreck on a distant world. Manage your colonists' moods, needs, wounds, diseases, and addictions. Build in forests, deserts, jungles, tundras, and beyond. Watch as colonists form and break relationships with relatives, lovers, and spouses. Replace injured limbs and organs with prosthetics, bionics, or biological parts harvested from others. Fight pirates, tribes, wild animals, giant insects, and ancient killing machines. Craft structures, weapons, and clothing from metal, wood, stone, cloth, and futuristic materials. Tame and train adorable pets, productive farm animals, and lethal attack beasts. Trade with passing ships and caravans, or form your own caravans to complete missions, trade, raid other factions, or migrate your entire colony. Dig through snow, survive storms, and put out fires. Capture refugees or prisoners and turn them to your side, or sell them into slavery. Discover a new world generated with every playthrough, explore hundreds of wild and interesting mods on the Steam Workshop, and learn to play easily with the help of a smart, unobtrusive AI tutor. RimWorld is a story generator. It is designed to co-write tragic, twisted, and triumphant tales about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, famine, and survival. It works by controlling the "random" events the world throws at you. Every storm, pirate raid, or traveling merchant is a card dealt into your story by the AI narrator. Several narrators are available: Randy Random does crazy things, Cassandra Classic builds rising tension, and Phoebe Chillax prefers to relax. Your colonists are not professional settlers; they are crash survivors from a destroyed passenger liner in orbit. You might end up with a noble, an accountant, and a housewife. Gain more colonists by capturing them in combat and turning them to your side, buying them from slave traders, or taking in refugees—so your colony is always a motley crew. Each person's background is recorded and affects how they play: a noble excels at social skills but refuses physical labor, a farmhand can cultivate but cannot research, a nerdy scientist is great at research but hopeless socially, and a genetically modified assassin only knows how to kill—though very well. Colonists develop and destroy relationships. Each has an opinion of others, determining whether they become lovers, marry, cheat, or fight. Your two best colonists might be happily married until one falls for the handsome surgeon who saved their life from a bullet wound. The game generates an entire planet, from pole to equator. You decide whether to land your emergency pods in a cold northern tundra, a parched desert plain, a temperate forest, or a humid equatorial jungle. Different zones have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, mineral resources, and terrain. Surviving a stifling, disease-infested jungle is very different from enduring a barren desert or a frozen tundra with a two-month growing season. You are not trapped in one place: form a caravan of people, animals, and prisoners to rescue kidnapped allies from pirate outposts, attend peace talks, trade with factions, raid enemy colonies, or pack up and move your whole settlement. Use rocket-powered transport pods to travel faster. Tame and train animals—adorable pets cheer up sad colonists, farm animals can be worked, milked, and sheared, and attack beasts can be unleashed on enemies. Colonists constantly observe their situation and surroundings to decide how to feel: they respond to hunger, fatigue, witnessing deaths, disrespectfully buried corpses, injuries, darkness, cramped quarters, sleeping outdoors or in shared rooms, and much more. If too stressed, they may snap or break down. Wounds, infections, prosthetics, and chronic conditions are tracked on every body part and affect
